Photos from our Visit to IDEO

Posted by Kenny Tomlin on Monday, April 20, 2009 in RFI News

Today Jeremy, Jerry, and I had the awesome privilege of meeting some of the team at IDEO in Palo Alto, CA.  Dennis Boyle, one of the first employees and General Partner gave us the tour along with Charles and Kevin.

I was first introduced to IDEO when I saw the Nightline special on their company about 10 years ago where the team was followed as they created a new and improved shopping cart (pictured below).  Since that time I have continued to follow IDEO through their website and excellent books. Following are a small number of pictures from our visit.

The infamous shopping cart featured in the Nightline special

Perfecting a bike for the average rider

The evolution of the Nerf football as created in their toy lab

A manual water pump developed for 3rd world countries

The prototype shop

Early prototypes of the computer mouse

Rethinking the common beer bottle

The evolution of the Palm

A practical joke becomes a permanent office / meeting room

Lots of personalization in work areas

Chris Mortensen's On Twitter

Posted by Kenny Tomlin on Friday, April 17, 2009 in Project Launch

If you're a fan of the NFL, then you'll know Chris Mortensen. Chris is a Senior NFL Analyst for ESPN and is the go to guy for inside information on the players and teams. Chris came by the office earlier this week to discuss another project and during the conversation we got him caught up on the benefits of Twitter. As a personal fan of the NFL, Chris is definitely a guy that I would want to follow. He took me through the photos on his phone and if he Twitters half the stuff he's involved in it will be a fun follow.

Today we personalized his Twitter background and gave him a quick run-down on the easiest ways to use Twitter. You can follow Chris at http://www.twitter.com/mort2u.

Rockfish Interactive Introduces CrazyHotJob.com

Posted by Kenny Tomlin on Monday, April 13, 2009 in Project Launch

Sometime back, I wrote about our commitment at Rockfish to launch new companies and technologies.  I encourage you to spend some time on our website to learn more about why we believe this is important.  True to that commitment, today I'm pleased to announce the launch of CrazyHotJob.com.

To answer the question, "What is CrazyHotJob.com?" let me tell you the story about how we came up with the idea.

We have been growing at a pretty steady pace at Rockfish.  Almost a year ago we hired a Director of HR and Recruiting to help us keep up with the demand for driven and talented employees.  Like most companies, we've experimented with a number of different job boards and have had limited success.

Eight or nine months ago I read about Woot in Inc. Magazine.  I loved the simplicity of one item for sale each day and thought that we should do something similar for jobs.  Many of the job boards are dominated by sheer volume.  I wanted to launch a site that posted just one job each day, and to make the cut it had to be crazy hot. It's taken us a while to finally get time to work on this, but the idea stayed on our list and today we have launched the site.

What makes a job crazy hot?  Some factors may include; location, salary, stock options, signing bonuses, work environment, and work type.  We also realize the some of the best jobs may be offered by smaller companies or non-profits that can't afford a fee to post, so having your job featured on CrazyHotJob.com is absolutely free.

How is each day's job selected?  You help us choose.  Every submitted posting answers the question, "Why is this job crazy hot?"  The answers to that question are posted on the site.  Users can vote the job either “hot” or “cold,” and the job with the most “hot” votes will almost certainly be the job that is posted live on the site the next day.

We need your help to make the idea a success.  First, if your company has a crazy hot job opportunity, encourage them to post it.  Second, review the submitted postings and vote on the job you would most like to see published the next day.

We've got a few other thoughts on how to make the site even more interesting.  If you've got ideas, we'd love to hear your feedback.
